Top 6 Things To Spruce Up Your Patio

Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial kick-off start to summer.  What better place to enjoy the sun (and a cocktail, of course), than on your patio with your friends and family.

Here are 6 Things to Spruce Up Your Patio to give you and your guests (or buyers, if your are selling your home) the ultimate entertaining experience.

1.  Out with the old and in with the new...or not??

Take an honest look at your patio set.  Is it in good condition? Is there enough seating? Is it ugly?

If you answered "yes" to all, then stick with it.  All you need is several cans of black spray paint and an open area. Start spraying.  My favorite spray paint is Rust-Oleum Universal All Surface Spray Paint in Gloss Black at Home Depot.  Love this stuff.  The gloss black spray will restore your old set and keep you on trend.

2.  Add a Patio Umbrella for Impact.

Your umbrella will most likely be the first thing your guests will notice, therefore, make it bold and beautiful.  Make sure it is proper in scale to the area, and anchored with a cement umbrella base.  Don't go cheap here.  You don't want to be that person running after your umbrella...ugh.

3.  Baby Got Back.

We all work hard to keep our tush tight.  Reward the tush with a comfy cushion.  I love the box cushion for the added comfort.  I suggest keeping the color neutral (not boring) so that you can play with accessories.  Most importantly, make sure they are waterproof.  Don't make the same mistake I did....can't tell you how many times I have had to dash from my bed at 2am to bring in the cushions from the rain.

4.  Toss Pillows...Girls Love Them, Guys Hate Them...

That's why I'm convinced they are called "toss" pillows. Negative?  Personally, I can't get enough of them.  Mix patterns, textures and sizes.  Just don't go overboard on the amount or you will find people "tossing" them on the floor.

5.  Bring the Indoor Feeling Outside.

Add an outdoor area rug to anchor the conversation set or to create multiple lounge areas.  Outdoor rugs have come a long way.  So many patterns and textures to choose from.  They are no longer that tough, plastic, and cheap-looking.  Some are so soft that I have chosen to use them indoors.  Just remember to compliment your rug with your umbrella.

6.  Salute!

Don't forget your fabulous drinkware.  My friends and family already know that I adore the perfect mason jar.  Not too big...Not too heavy...Topped with a mint spring and printed straw.  For my more sophisticated readers, check out the Govino Shatterproof Champagne Glasses from Crate and Barrel.  Great addition to your bar cart.

Now the only thing left to do is to work on your summer signature cocktail.  Happy Summer.
